Overall aim This course is designed for those who wish to pursue a career as an advanced practitioner in providing specialised care for children and adults experiencing troublesome tinnitus and hyperacusis. Students will gain a wider spectrum of theoretical knowledge and clinical skills with regard to tinnitus and hyperacusis rehabilitation. This course will outline psychometric assessment, appropriate referrals to ENT and mental health, evidence-based practice, application of specialist cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) in tinnitus and hyperacusis rehabilitation, and service development.
Intended learning outcomes By the end of this course students should be able to:
  • Make appropriate onward referrals to ENT for medical examination and treatment.
  • Identify limits of their own professional competence and boundaries and make appropriate onward referrals to mental health.
  • Apply the bio-psycho-social model of healthcare in assessment and management of tinnitus and hyperacusis.
  • Critically analyse the clinical application of a wide range of self-report questionnaires in assessment of tinnitus handicap, tinnitus loudness, annoyance and effect on life, severity of insomnia, and symptoms of anxiety and depression.
  • Critically interpret the outcome of the Uncomfortable Loudness Levels test and the application of psychometric self-report assessment tools in diagnosis of hyperacusis and quantifying its severity and its effect on patient’s life.
  • Select and apply a wide range of specialist self-report tools for screening of underlying panic disorder, phobia, obsessive compulsive disorder, generalised anxiety, suicidal ideations, health anxiety and depression and make appropriate onward referral to mental health services for further investigations and treatment.
  • Analyse and critically discuss the relevance and evidence-base for psychological models of chronic tinnitus and hyperacusis.
  • Critically discuss the key cognitive behavioural theories and their relevance to the development and maintenance of troublesome tinnitus and hyperacusis.
  • Apply a wide range of basic cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) skills for management of tinnitus and hyperacusis.
  • Apply a wide range of basic counselling skills in order to help the patient to explore and pinpoint the tinnitus or hyperacusis-related distress and the significance of their impact on the patient’s life.
  • Develop formulation and case conceptualisation focused on tinnitus/hyperacusis-related distress
  • Design appropriate Behavioural Experiments for tinnitus and hyperacusis rehabilitation
  • Use Diary of Thoughts and Feelings and Thought Records for management of tinnitus and hyperacusis associated distress
  • Apply principles of guided discovery and empirical demonstration in order to help patients explore the effect of tinnitus/hyperacusis on their life, their cognitive appraisal, emotional and behavioural reactions.
  • Use Socratic questioning style in order to help patients explore alternative perspectives and attitudes.
  • Apply a wide range of basic client-centred counselling skills and empathic listening skills within a clinical context for patients experiencing troublesome tinnitus and hyperacusis.
  • Identify the ethical limits of the use of counselling skills.
  • Critically analyse the clinical practice guidelines for management of tinnitus and hyperacusis.
  • Develop a Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Rehabilitation Clinic informed by the latest research evidence and consistent with professional guidelines.

6) Students will be provided with the instructions on how to prepare their counselling video task. Students need to have access to a video camera (this is not provided).
Teaching and learning methods A wide range of learning methods are applied within this specialist course comprising: interactive lectures, group discussions, self-directed learning, reflective writing, critical writing, and practical exercises through role play. These are complemented by the post-course learning opportunities that are summarised in the list below:
  • Students are encouraged to participate in discussion forum in Facebook group.
  • Personalised feedback from the course tutor on assignments.
  • Students are encouraged to use the course online materials on Dropbox.
Assessment details
  • Critical writing essay (2000 words)
  • Counselling skills assignment with 1000 words reflective writing on one’s counselling skills
Mode of study The course is taught face-to-face
Learning time The total learning time is 150 hours, consisting of:
  • Lectures and practical training: 18 hours
  • Directed self-study: 112 hours (reading and working through the provided/ recommended course material)
  • Self-directed study: 20 hours (general reading around the subject, contributing to online discussion forum)
Pre-requisites A degree at BSc, MSc, or doctorate level, or other qualifications of an equivalent standard, in one of the disciplines listed above in the “target audience” section.
No previous experience in tinnitus and hyperacusis management is required. Experienced professionals in the field also benefit.
