Overall aim This course is designed for those who wish to enhance their skills and knowledge in clinical application of MI in the process of rehabilitative audiology. Students will gain a wider spectrum of theoretical knowledge and clinical skills with regard to psycho-social aspects of hearing impairment and the application of advanced evidence-based psychological skills in empowering patients through the process of audiologic rehabilitation.
Intended learning outcomes By the end of this course students should be able to:
  • Apply a wide range of basic counselling skills with a focus on empathic listening skills in order to build a good working alliance with patients.
  • Critically discuss principles of Motivational Interviewing (MI).
  • Critically discuss the key components and attitudes of MI: Partnership, acceptance, compassion, and evocation.
  • Deliver flexible and strategic use of some core communications and counselling skills in the process of rehabilitative audiology.
  • Critically compare the conceptual framework and theoretical underpinnings of MI with other psychological theories comprising: cognitive dissonance, reformulation of self-perception theory, Roger’s theory of necessary and sufficient interpersonal conditions for fostering change, and Transtheoretical model (stages of change).
  • Apply basic MI skills to improve hearing aid use and outcome.
  • Deliver audiology consultation sessions consistent with the process of MI comprising: engaging, focusing, evoking and planning.
  • Apply the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) tool in order to analyse and appraise the MI skills used by self and their colleagues.
  • Use MI technique of elicit-provide-elicit (EPE) in sharing information with patients.
  • Critically discuss the principles of psycholinguistics or psychology of language and its relevance to MI.
  • Critically appraise the research evidence on MI.
  • Identify the ethical limits of the use of counselling skills.
Course structure The course is expected to include sessions addressing the following topics (though please note that these may be subject to change):
  • Application of client-centred counselling method of Carl Rogers in audiology clinics
  • Theoretical underpinnings of Motivational Interviewing (MI)
  • MI in audiology
  • Practical on clinical application of MI key components
  • Practical on MI micro-skills
  • Practical on assessing MI adherence
  • Focus on improving hearing aid use and outcome via MI
  • Evidence-based practice

Teaching and learning methods A wide range of learning methods are applied within this specialist course comprising: interactive lectures, group discussions, self-directed learning, reflective writing, critical writing, and practical exercises through role play. These are complemented by the post-course learning opportunities that are summarised in the list below:
  • Students are encouraged to participate in discussion forum in Facebook group.
  • Personalised feedback from the course tutor on assignments.
  • Students are encouraged to use the course online materials on Dropbox.
Assessment details
  • Critical writing essay (2000 words)
  • Counselling skills assignment with 1000 words reflective writing on one’s counselling skills
Mode of study The course is taught face-to-face
Learning time The total learning time is 150 hours, consisting of:
  • Lectures and practical training: 12 hours
  • Directed self-study: 118 hours (reading and working through the provided/ recommended course materials)
  • Self-directed study: 20 hours (general reading around the subject, contributing to online discussion forum)
Pre-requisites A degree at BSc, MSc, or doctorate level, or other qualifications of an equivalent standard, in one of the disciplines listed above in the “target audience” section.
